Has Africa been on your bucket list?

Well it never was for me, but back in 2012 I was involved with an outreach project to support a local Maasai community to build a school in Tanzania. In 2013 I made my first trip and I was hooked!! Totally hooked….now 6 trips later I am planning my 7th trip to take another group of volunteers on another build project.

These beautiful people and this gorgeous country just draws you in. It is the cradle of humanity and there is something so majestic, expansive and raw about it! When I am there I feel so connected. More connected to myself , to the land and to other people and life is so much simpler. The Maasai are very kind and generous people and they know how to connect with their hearts , even if they can’t speak your language.

Our group, Maasai Friends 4Good, and our project is totally community driven.

Our group is called the Maasai Friends 4Good and our project is totally community driven and to date we have 7 classrooms, one Mamas jewelry shop, one sewing business. Our focus is to create sustainability so we can pay our teachers and continue to expand our school.

Our last trip was in 2017 and we built the foundation for a dormitory and completed an 8 room latrine. Everyone in our group was so moved by this experience . Knowing you are leaving a legacy that will help this community reach out of poverty and create new opportunities for their families. On my last trip when I asked what their major challenge was, it was hunger. I know that we are making a difference and the love that they extend to us is so soul restoring and teaching us so much about what really matters in this life.

I also have a beautiful little girl there, who I took out of an orphanage on my first trip and placed her in an English boarding school. Bahati is such a smart ,determined soul and is # 1 in her class. I just know she is going to do great things and there was a reason I was so drawn to her.
